Marlborough's diversity is what gives the region its unique identity. Kaikoura's majestic, snow-capped peaks that tower above the township is one of New Zealand's scenic
wonders; the Marlborough Sound's bush covered hills and tranquil bays and coves await discovery; and the Wairau Plain and Awatere Valley is a wine lover's paradise.
The region also has a rich and colourful history. Maori still have a strong and vital presence in the area and evidence of Marlborough's colonial past can still be found
in many of the older buildings in Kaikoura, Havelock and Picton. Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound has a monument commemorating Captain James Cook's exploration of the area
in the late 1700's and Kaikoura's historically significant Fyffe House is a memorial to the region's whaling history.
